I am directed by the Board of Trade to state, for the information of the Earl of Elgin, that they have received, through the Foreign Office, a barometer for Cap- tain James Marrach, Master, and a binocular glass for Mr Stewart Keightley, Third Officer, late of the S.S. "Shantung", of London which have been awarded to them by the French Government in recognition of their services to the crew of the French S.S. "Tamise" in the vicinity of Cape Varela on the 10th September 1904.
The Board are informed that it is not known when
Messrs Warrach and Keightley will return to the United
Kingdom, that in June last they were in the service of
the China Navigation Company Limited, the former as Mas-
ter of the S.S. "Chihli" and the latter as Third Officer
of the S.S. "Chingtu", and that their address is care
of Messrs Butterfield and Swire, Hong Kong.
The awards in question are transmitted herewith,
and I am to request that you will be so good as to move
his Lordship to cause them to be forwarded through the
usual channel for presentation, and to give instructions
that receipts may be obtained and sent to this Department
in due course.
